Il prend la tête de la rébellion des nobles, la "guerre folle", contre Charles VIII et la régente Anne de Beaujeu, mais il est battu à Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier et il est emprisonné.

Il se réconcilie avec le roi de France et prend part aux guerres d'Italie.

Lorsqu'il succède à Charles VIII, il épouse Anne de Bretagne, reine veuve, et se lance à son tour dans l'aventure italienne.

Il donnera en dot à sa fille, qu'il a fiancée au petit-fils de Maximilien d'AUTRICHE le futur Charles Quint, le Milanais, Gênes, la Bourgogne et la Bretagne par le Traité de Blois. Ce traité est annulé par les états généraux de Tours.

Il enchaîne victoires et défaites, dans le Milanais et dans la conquête du royaume de Naples. La Sainte Ligue est formée contre la France (Venise, l'Espagne, l'Empire et l'Angleterre) et Louis est une nouvelle fois battu à Novare par les Suisses et à Guinguatte par les Anglais. Pour signer la paix avec l'Angleterre, il épouse Marie Tudor.

Note

Jeanne est mariée par son père au duc d'Orléans car étant maladive et incapable de procréer, Louis XI pense ainsi mettre fin à cette dynastie.

Le jeune duc d'Orléans bataillera sans cesse pour obtenir l'annulation de ce mariage.

Anne de Beaujeu use de son influence pour que cette annulation ne soit pas prononcée, mais lorsque Louis est roi de FRANCE en 1498, le pape Borgia y consent. Les motifs invoqués sont la non consommation du mariage (Jeanne était contrefaite) et le manque de consentement (Louis XII s'était marié sous la menace).

Louis n'est resté veuf d'Anne de Bretagne que quelques mois car il s'est épris de la jeune Marie Tudor. Leur mariage ne durera que trois mois.
