Il règne tout d'abord sous la régence de sa mère, Marie de Blois. Il tente la reconquête du royaume de Naples sur Ladislas, fils de Charles III de Duras, roi de Hongrie (entre 1409 et 1411). Il est vainqueur à la bataille de Rocca Secca en 1411 mais ne réussit pas à évincer Ladislas.
