Premier à porter le titre de Dauphin de France.

Il assure la régence pendant la captivité de son père, Jean II le Bon. Il doit également réprimer la révolte d'Etienne Marcel et la Jacquerie.

C'est lui qui signe le traité de Brétigny avec l'Angleterre (voir note du roi Jean II le Bon).

Il s'entoure d'hommes de valeur : Jean et Guillaume de Dormans, Pierre d'Orgemont et Nicolas Oresme pour les finances.

Grâce à Du Guesclin, il met fin à la lutte contre le roi de Navarre, Charles II le Mauvais et débarrasse le royaume des Grandes Compagnies.

A sa mort, les possessions anglaises sont très restreintes : Bordeaux, Calais et quelques places fortes.

Il fonde la Bibliothèque royale, reconstruit le Louvre, édifie l'hôtel de Saint-Pol et la Bastille à Paris ainsi que le château de Beauté-sur-Marne.
