Il quitte Paris pour Bourges pendant la guerre entre Armagnacs et Bourguigons en 1418.

En 1420, sa mère, Isabeau de Baviere, signe le traite de Troyes qui deshérite Charles au profit du roi Henri V d'Angleterre. A la mort de ce dernier, lorsque Henri VI lui succède, sous la régence de Bedford, Charles VII n'est plus reconnu que dans le Sud-Ouest et le Midi.

C'est Jeanne d'Arc qui lui redonne confiance, délivre Orléans et le fait sacrer à Reims en 1429.

Après la reconquête d'une partie nord de la France (Orléanais, Vendômois, Champagne, Brie, Valois, Beauvaisis) Charles se réconcilie avec le duc de Bourgogne, Philippe III le Bon, qui était allié aux Anglais par le traité d'Arras (1435).

Paris est repris en 1436 et les trêves de Tours signées avec les Anglais en 1444.

Le roi peut alors réorganiser le royaume, créer une nouvelle armée, rétablir une monnaie saine et lever des impôts réguliers.

Il poursuit ensuite la reconquête de la France : la Normandie en 1450, la Guyenne après la chute de Bordeaux en 1453.

Seule Calais reste aux mains des Anglais.

Note

Depuis 1434, le roi a une liaison avec Agnès Sorel, à qui il donnera quatre enfants.

Cette dernière tente à plusieurs reprises d'opposer le roi au Dauphin, futur Louis XI.
