En 1356, il est fait prisonnier par le fils d'Edouard III d'Angleterre, le Prince de Galles Edouard, à Poitiers.

Le fils de Jean le Bon, le futur Charles V, assure la régence pendant la captivité de son père, réprime la jacquerie et la révolte d'Etienne Marcel.

Le Dauphin signe le traité de Brétigny le 8 mai 1360, abandonnant à l'Angleterre entre autres l'Aquitaine, et paie la rançon de trois millions d'écus d'or pour la libération du roi.

Le roi Jean, apprenant qu'un des otages, son autre fils Louis d'Anjou, s'est échappé considère qu'il doit être fidèle à sa parole et retourne à Londres, où il meurt en 1364.
