Note: Bien que dénué de caractère et d'intelligence, il fut un personnage important des guerres de religion. En 1585, la Ligue catholique l'imposa au roi Henri III comme héritier de la couronne de France à la place de son neveu protestant le futur Henri IV. Lors des États généraux de 1588 à Blois, il est mis en arrestation sur l'ordre du roi. À la mort de ce dernier, alors qu'il est toujours séquestré, il est reconnu par les ligueurs comme le seul roi de France légitime. Il est proclamé par le Parlement de Paris sous le nom de « Charles X » (1589). Il meurt l'année suivante à l'âge de soixante-six ans
