Note | Il n'a que neuf ans à la mort de son père. C'est donc sa mère, Marie de Medicis qui exerce la régence avec Concini, tenant son fils à l'écart. Louis fait assassiner Concini en 1617, aidé de Luynes, à qui il laisse le pouvoir. Il doit alors faire face à la révolte de sa mère et des Grands. Luynes quant à lui est battu par les protestants à Montauban et meurt en 1621. Richelieu entreprend alors la réconciliation entre la mère et le fils et prend de plus en plus d'ascendant sur le jeune roi. Ce dernier soutiendra son ministre en toutes circonstances y compris lors des cabales montées par sa mère, sa femme ou son frère. Il choisit une politique de grandeur basée sur une alliance avec les puissances protestantes contre l'Espagne qu'il perpétuera même après la mort de Richelieu, en 1642. |
